Thu, 12 Sep 2019 22:55:09 -0400 La gobernadora Wanda Vázquez Garced logró que la Agencia Federal para el Manejo de Emergencias (FEMA, por sus siglas en inglés) deje sin efecto el proceso 270 que regula el uso de fondos de reconstrucción, y el gobierno de Puerto Rio tenga acceso a fondos federales para poderlos manejar de manera directa.La gobernadora sostuvo una reunión con personal de FEMA para indagar sobre el desembolso de fondos de recuperación y reconstrucción tras el paso de los huracanes Irma y María. “En julio pasado, ante la incertidumbre gubernamental que atravesó la isla, FEMA determinó implementar el proceso 270. En ese momento, la agencia federal dijo que, ante las irregularidades en el gobierno, requirieron la imposición del proceso 270. Como parte de nuestra visita a la agencia federal, demostramos que Puerto Rico está estable, que podemos realizar los procesos de manera confiable y transparente, por lo que dejaron sin efecto el complejo procedimiento para tener acceso a los fondos para Puerto Rico”, aseguró la gobernadora.
La primera ejecutiva aprovechó la oportunidad para agradecerle a Peter Gaynor, administrador interino de FEMA, y a su equipo de trabajo, por tal determinación, que es para el beneficio del pueblo puertorriqueño” Por su parte, Omar Marrero, director ejecutivo de AAFAF aseguró que “sostuvimos una reunión excelente donde se discutieron, entre otras cosas, las prioridades de la gobernadora y las iniciativas de su administración para darle estabilidad, credibilidad y confianza al proceso de recuperación necesario para el beneficio del gobierno de Puerto Rico”. Mientras, Ottmar Chávez Piñero, director ejecutivo de la Oficina Central de Recuperación, Reconstrucción y Resiliencia (COR3), aseguró que “luego de la reunión en la capital federal, en donde se determinó que el proceso de revisión y reembolso de los fondos federales, conocido como el 270, estará bajo la responsabilidad del gobierno de Puerto Rico, es un paso adelante en el proceso de recuperación. Esta acción afirma el restablecimiento de la confianza y un reconocimiento de que los controles desarrollados localmente han sido de forma correcta y transparente”. Chávez Piñero añadió que “desde la Oficina Central de Recuperación, Reconstrucción y Resiliencia mantendremos la comunicación y la coordinación con todo el andamiaje federal para garantizar el flujo del dinero para los sub-beneficiarios. Así, continuaremos enfocados en nuestro norte, que es promover el bienestar y la seguridad de los ciudadanos en la isla, de cara al futuro”. Vázquez Garced estuvo con la representante demócrata Stephanie Murphy, quien dijo ser aliada de Puerto Rico y aseguró colaborará para lograr la paridad de los fondos de Medicaid para los puertorriqueños. Murphy también fue enfática en que trabajará para lograr la equidad para Puerto Rico y el trato igual en asignaciones de fondos destinados a salud, economía, desarrollo económico y recuperación. Además, la gobernadora se reunió con Michael San Nicolas, representante de Guam en la cámara federal. San Nicolas aseveró que trabajará en conjunto para lograr beneficios para Puerto Rico bajo su condición territorial. Por su parte, el representante por Oregon, Greg Walden se comprometió a trabajar con la gobernadora para lograr avances en asuntos de salud y Medicaid. Waldon aprovechó la ocasión para reconocer la decisión de Vázquez Garced de crear la Unidad de Control de Fraude al Medicaid (MFCU) mientras fungía como secretaria del Departamento de Justicia.
Steny Hoyer, representante por Maryland, se mostró preocupado porque Puerto Rico no ha recibido los fondos que se asignaron para la reconstrucción y se comprometió a apoyar a la isla para que dichos fondos sean recibidos. Como parte de su agenda del día, la primera ejecutiva también se reunió con Chuck Schumer, senador por Nueva York en el congreso, quien se comprometió a ayudar en las gestiones para lograr el desembolso de fondos de FEMA, así como la ayudas que todavía no han llegado a la isla tras el paso de los huracanes Irma y María. Mientras, el senador de Florida, Rick Scott, destacó que su meta es ayudar para que Puerto Rico reciba los fondos de rehabilitación y recuperación que fueron aprobados en el congreso.
La gobernadora, en compañía de la Comisionada Residente en Washington, Jennifer González, se reunió con Nancy Pelosi, presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes Federal, quien aseguró que insertará en la agenda legislativa asuntos prioritarios para el desarrollo y reconstrucción de Puerto Rico.
Mientras, Lisa Murkowski, senadora por Alaska y presidenta del Comité de Energía y Recursos Naturales, que evalúa el caso de Puerto Rico con la Ley Promesa, reconoció la buena relación que el gobierno actual quiere establecer con la Junta de Supervisión Fiscal.

Sept. 13, 2019: While there are hundreds of organizations promoting donation efforts for the Bahamas on the heels of the devastation for Hurricane Dorian, here are several ways you can help through these organizations that are on the ground and already working to help the victims. 1: World Central Kitchen World Central Kitchen, led by Chef Jose Andes and an army of volunteer chefs, have so far fed over 100,000 victims of the storm through donations and support. They are taking meals from a kitchen 80 miles away in Nassau to Abaco and surrounding islands in several helicopter and seaplane trips each day. The WCK’s paella operation is also up and running in Freeport, working side by side with local chefs, and the amazing Grand Bahama community is helping deliver meals to hard hit areas. Donate here. 2: Samaritan’s Purse North Carolina non-profit, Samaritan’s Purse has not only stepped in with supplied but has set up an emergency field hospital in Freeport at the request of the World Health Organization and the government of the Bahamas. They treated more than 90 patients on the first full day of operations on Sept. 10th. It’s team of surgeons, physicians, nurses, pharmaceutical staff, and biotech engineers will be able to provide medical care for up to 100 outpatient cases per day. There is bed space available for as many as 40 inpatients. The hospital can provide up to 10 surgeries per day and is complete with an obstetrics ward with delivery room. Support them here. 3: UNICEF Since September 7th, UNICEF welcomed the arrival to Nassau, Bahamas of a plane carrying nearly 1.5 tons of lifesaving supplies to help provide access to safe water for over 9,500 children and families left reeling by Hurricane Dorian. This first supply shipment of UNICEF humanitarian items was freighted by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and included over 400,000 water purification tablets, several 5,000-liters tanks for at least 2,000 people and 1,000 jerry cans. UNICEF has also deployed staff in the Bahamas to assess the needs of the most vulnerable children and families. The first responder team is composed of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), child protection, emergency coordination and communications experts. Despite the extremely challenging logistic situation on the ground, UNICEF was able to reach Abaco island to assess the extent of the destruction to help inform its humanitarian response plan. Support them here 4: Bahamas Red Cross The Bahamas Red Cross is working to help the many victims on the ground while the American Red Cross has committed an initial $2 million to support those affected in the Bahamas by Dorian, and is also helping evacuees arriving in the U.S. Donate them here. 5: Mercy Corps Mercy Corps is already working on the ground, helping survivors and working to meet the needs of families and communities affected by this historic storm. These includes through solar lamps that include a phone charging outlet so hurricane victims can have a light at night and also charge a phone. Donate here 6: Food For The Poor Food For The Poor has partnered with several organizations including HeadKnowles Foundation, the Sandals Foundation, the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida and the Archdiocese of Nassau to aid the people of the Bahamas after it was devastated last week by Category 5 Hurricane Dorian. The first disaster pallets were sent by air freight last week and were received by HeadKnowles, a relief organization in the Bahamas, for distribution. Relief items include generators, two-burner stoves, blankets and tarps, rice casserole meals, bags of rice and a general assortment of food, juices, chainsaws, diapers and 5-gallon buckets.
